Project Hydrangea: A Whole Home Coming Together
We're helping a Winnipeg family rethink their kitchen, side entrance, laundry, mudroom, bathrooms, primary bedroom, and connected flooring.

Our Project Hydrangea clients already love where they live. What they need is a home that feels better suited to their life now, without losing the familiarity that made them want to stay. We are bringing the kitchen, side entrance, laundry, mudroom, primary suite, and two bathrooms into one thoughtful plan, with Task Reno coordinating construction.
This is still very much a work in progress. The photos show the home we started with, before the new finishes and final styling are in place.

Where we started
The original kitchen has medium oak raised-panel cabinets, pale counters, a peninsula, and a white electric range. Tall cabinets wrap the refrigerator, while the peninsula tightens the connection to the adjoining room. The patterned floor changes again at the kitchen doorway, making each space feel more separate than it needs to.
The central hallway has dark stained doors and trim against pale walls, with a small geometric floor running between several doorways. Downstairs, the washer and dryer sit on either side of an exposed double laundry sink. Concrete walls, open insulation, visible services, and a floor drain make it clear that this is still a utility area.
For us, these rooms are all part of the same conversation. This project is not about changing one cabinet door or choosing one new paint colour. It is about making cooking, arrivals, laundry, storage, and quiet time at home feel easier.
Before and in progress
Making the everyday spaces work harder
We are rethinking the kitchen for daily cooking and a more comfortable connection to the surrounding rooms. The existing peninsula and tall cabinet blocks affect both work surface and movement, so we are studying the layout before settling on the details. Final cabinet colours, counters, tile, and appliances are not shown in these photos because they are not installed yet.
The side entrance is one of the most important parts of the plan. It is where wet boots land, coats gather, laundry needs to happen, and everyone comes and goes. We are bringing mudroom storage, laundry, a half bath, and general household storage into this zone so each of those daily routines has a natural place.
Good design has to work on a busy weekday, not only when the room is perfectly tidy. Keeping those practical functions close to the way the family enters should make the rest of the main floor feel calmer, too.
A calm foundation from room to room
New flooring is planned through the living room and hallway. We want one continuous run to reduce the visual stops and starts along the main path through the home. Before installation, we still need to settle door clearances, transitions, and the way the new floor will meet any retained finishes.
On the private side of the home, we are planning new paint and closet work in the primary bedroom, an update to the primary bathroom, and a separate three-piece bathroom. These rooms do not need to match exactly. They do need enough shared colour and material language to feel like they belong under the same roof.
Current status
Hydrangea remains in progress. The photographs show the original kitchen and hallway, the exterior, and the unfinished laundry area. They do not show final cabinetry, tile, fixtures, flooring, or styled rooms.
What we can share now is the heart of the plan: keep the house and location our clients value, remove the little points of friction they feel every day, and connect a long list of practical upgrades so the home feels considered as a whole. We will share the finished materials when they are truly in the rooms. For now, we are taking the time to get the plan right.
