Project Peony: A Basement Made for Everyday Living
We designed this Winnipeg basement with a fireplace lounge, bathroom, bedroom, and storage so the whole lower level could become part of family life.

Our clients wanted more than one beautiful feature in their basement. They wanted a lower level that could genuinely support family life, with room to relax, sleep, bathe, and keep everything organized. We planned Project Peony as a connected group of useful rooms, with Task Reno coordinating the build.
The finished photos here focus on the fireplace lounge, bathroom, and storage. A bedroom is also part of the completed project, although it is not shown in this gallery.

A warm heart for the lounge
We organized the lounge around one full-height feature wall. Narrow vertical wood slats rise behind the television and linear electric fireplace, drawing the eye upward and bringing warmth and rhythm into the lower room. We centred both elements within the slatted panel so the technology feels like a considered part of the design, not something added at the end.
White built-ins sit on either side. Open shelves give the family room to display favourite pieces, while lower cabinets hide media accessories and everyday clutter. Their textured fronts add a quiet detail without competing with the wood slats. Continuous wood-look plank flooring gives the lounge a durable base and connects it to the rest of the finished basement.
This wall does two important jobs at once. It creates a cosy place for television and fireplace evenings, and it turns the longest wall into useful storage without filling the room with separate pieces of furniture.
A bathroom with room for personality
In the bathroom, we let the black and white patterned floor be the star. Its large floral geometry gives the compact room so much character at floor level, which allowed us to keep the walls and shower bright and simple.
A white walk-in shower fills the end of the room. The moulded surround includes practical ledges, and a black-framed sliding glass enclosure keeps water contained without a curtain interrupting the view. Matte black controls, a handheld showerhead, and the enclosure rail repeat one finish throughout the wet area.
We kept the other fixtures visually quiet beside that strong floor. A woven laundry basket and warm wood details add natural texture so the black and white palette feels comfortable, not severe.
Finished spaces
Giving everyday things a proper place
A tall matte black cabinet adds another storage zone beside the bathroom. Inside, white adjustable shelves and removable bins keep linens and household supplies sorted. When it is closed, the dark exterior reads as one simple vertical panel. Inside, the setup can change as the family’s needs change.
We planned storage throughout Peony instead of collecting it in one leftover corner. The media wall has concealed lower cabinets, the tall cabinet handles bulkier items, and each type of storage sits close to where it will actually be used. It is a simple idea, but it makes a finished basement far easier to live in.
Bringing all the rooms together
Our main design challenge was making several basement functions feel like part of one home. Warm wood appears in the media wall and flooring. Black defines the fireplace, shower fittings, patterned floor, and storage cabinet. White keeps the built-ins and bathroom bright. Repeating that limited palette lets the lounge, bathroom, bedroom, and storage feel related without making every room identical.
Project Peony is not only a fireplace feature, even though that wall makes a lovely first impression. It is a complete lower level with places to relax, sleep, bathe, and put things away. The finished rooms feel warm and pulled together, but they are also ready to be used. That is what makes this basement feel like part of our clients’ home every day.
